Ciao – Current Serializations

Ciao is a shoujo manga magazine published by Shogakukan on a monthly basis that is aimed at the youngest female audience, ages 9-15. We’ve gotten series in North America from Viz media.

So which series have we seen in North America? There were earlier series from Viz that got published, but we haven’t gotten anything recent from Ciao in a long time. I think because of the demographic. The most well known series we got was Beauty Pop by Kyoko Arai. There was also Wedding Peach and Happy Happy Clover. Well, what can we beg publishers for? Here’s what’s currently running in Ciao:

Fin! Those are all the series currently running in Ciao. There are always short stories and one shots of course. These are the main series you will see that are ongoing.

So which of these series that’s non-licensed would I like to see?

  • Aru Hi Inu no Kuni kara Tegami ga Kite is the one that piques my interest the most and might do well here. The story is about letters sent from dog heaven to owners, and it’s full of furry friends. I noticed it’s been printed in other countries.
  • Also, with the popularity of Yokai Watch, that spin off for young girls would be entertaining as well. Kind of like Fairy Tail – Blue Mistral.
  • Elite Jack!! would be a series I would enjoy because of the premise. A young prodigy girl solving cases. It would be a fun story for younger girls.
  • I’d really like to have a look at Colors! From the drawings it looks like every character is based on a color, and as an artist, that interests me. I want to see how the colors are personified into characters.
  • Two of the horror series also caught my attention. Ningen Kaishuusha is about an after death transport vehicle, so the stories look like they would be morbid and comical. Then there’s the devious looking protagonist from Chocolat no Mahou. The fact that it’s classified horror makes me want to see what kind of tricky magic her chocolate happens to create.

How about you? What title would you buy if it was on the shelf?

  • I know this is an old post, but I have loved what I have read of Beauty Pop. I wish Shojo Beat would have more series like that. I want manga that is cleaner, and for what I remember Beauty Pop was definitely that. Now, I don’t know anything about these, so if any that I mention has bad things in it, I would not want it brought over. I’d pick Hanayome to Ijiwaru Darling, Dolly Kanon, Koisuru ♥︎ Pensaki, Puri Para and Koi Shite! Luna KISS.

Out of the ones you’ve picked, I like the looks/sounds of Colors!, Youkai Watch – Wakuwaku Nyanderful Days, and Elite Jack.

Shojo Beat has announced The Water God’s Bride by Rei Toma for April 2017

    • North American publishers are not licensing much for a younger audience anymore. We very rarely get series from Ciao or Ribon. “Hiyokoi” was the last Ribon series licensed, and we never got it because Tokyopop went out of business. We’re more likely to get one from Nakayoshi because they are owned by Kodansha, but still, some of those are for the older girls and not “clean” like you mention – for instance “Missions of Love” ran in Nakayoshi. I’ve read a little bit of “12 Sai” and it was pretty good. It recently got an anime that I’m sure you could find if you looked for it.
