Honest, intelligent news and reviews for manga romantics
Another moment this week coming out of Fruits Basket volume 6. This one portrays Yuki and Ayame Sohma’s relationship as brothers.
Yuki takes Tohru to Ayame’s costume shop where Ayame briskly whisks Tohru off into a dressing room to put on a princess type outfit. While Tohru is out, Ayame and Yuki embark on a conversation that seems to take them nowhere, and only serves to irritate Yuki. When Tohru returns, Yuki is smitten with her cuteness. Of course Ayame must intervene and stake his claim in exciting Yuki’s romantic fantasy. For which, Yuki immediately bashes Ayame.
I find this moment memorable not necessarily because of the actions taking place, but what is occurring in the emotions underneath it all. Although Yuki and Ayame pick at one another, and talk around each other, in this scene they are taking a step towards communicating once again as siblings. There’s the bonus of seeing Yuki fawn over Tohru in a cute dress, as well as Tohru turn all embarrassed because of Yuki’s attention. But I like how Yuki admits to Tohru that he’ll never understand his brother. That’s taking a step toward trying to relate to him. Ayame is reaching out to Yuki as well, in his own way. Go Sohma brothers!
