Oh, ho! It’s the new year and time for new manga! What’s coming out on shoujo shelves for the month of January 2015?

One new series this month – Meca Tanaka’s Meteor Prince. Wow, Goong has been publishing a long time. Thanks to Yen Press for not ever dropping it! Plenty of continuing series to catch up on as well. I’m most excited about the next volume of Kiss of the Rose Princess. What are you most excited about?

Strange accidents always seem to happen around Hako Natsuno – so much so that she’s been dubbed “The Queen of Bad Luck.” It’s hardly surprising then that a naked alien prince falls from the sky to tell her that out of all the girls in the universe, he’s come to Earth to mate with her. Does this mean Hako’s luck has changed, or…?

Sword Art Online: Progressive

Yuuki Asuna was a top student who spent her days at cram school and preparing for her high school entrance exams – but that was before she borrowed her brother’s virtual reality game system and wound up trapped in Sword Art Online with ten thousand other frightened players. As time passes, Asuna fears what will become of her life outside the fantasy realm – the failure she might seem in the eyes of her peers and parents.

Unwilling to wait on the sidelines for more experienced gamers to beat the game, Asuna employs her study habits to learn the mechanics of gaming – and swordplay. Her swiftness impresses Kirito, a pro gamer who invites Asuna to join the best players on the front lines. Is Asuna ready to swap class rankings for player rankings and join Kirito?

Note: Alternate retelling of Sword Art Online’s Aincrad arc from Asuna’s point of view.

  • Have you gotten your children to read manga? I read your post on how Heart of Manga was born, and immediately connected. I love reading, and it was in 6th grade that I discovered Tokyo Mew Mew, Naruto, Vampire Knight and Fullmetal Alchemist. It all started with Pokemon on TV for me though haha. I am in college now and still love manga and anime, and feel as if shoujo is finally getting a bigger audience. Some of my male friends gave shoujo a try and they enjoyed it!

I even discovered the beauty of language through manga, and now I am teaching myself Japanese and Russian. I feel as if manga has opened my eyes to other cultures and ways of life, and I hope that if and when I do have children, they can be readers and appreciate all ways of life too.

Thanks for sticking around as a blogger, and for a mom, you are really cool! I wish my parents could support this, but they don’t. Oh well. 🙂

    • My son is 7 and I’ve helped him to read one of the Pokemon manga. He’s still learning to read so trying to make him read backwards is a little confusing right now. I’m sure he’ll be a fan when he gets older, as his favorite TV shows are all anime. My daughter is one, so she’s too little to read. When my mom recently asked what I was going to do with my manga collection I told her I’d let my daughter read it one day. (You’d have to see my collection. Guess I’ll do a post on that one.) My daughter already loves books so I think she’ll take after mom and be an avid reader. 🙂

I’ve heard that time and again from young people. That their parents don’t understand or won’t understand their love of manga. I’m lucky that I’m an adult and my husband doesn’t mind my semi-expensive hobby either. He’s an anime fan. I’m with you on the cultural enlightenment, and I want my kids to see other cultures as well. My son spent the first three years of his life listening to J-pop in the car 🙂 I finally switched to listening to Radio Disney so he could at least start hearing the popular songs like his peers. But he still has some j-pop he likes to hear.

Thanks for saying I’m a cool mom. 🙂 I hope I stay that way for my kids’ sake. As for blogging, it’s hard to find peers locally who are interested in my passion for manga, so this is my doorway to other fans. Just like you!

      • Awww, your kids sound so cute! Haha, thank you for responding to my long question. Wow, I would LOVE to see you collection! And, it doesn’t matter what your age is, as long as you have a passion for something, that should be all that matters! I hope that I can find a husband who can support my hobby haha:)

Have you wondered if any of them would like to learn Japanese one day? Being so young, they must have picked up a lot from music and anime. Reading is one of the greatest gifts, is what my grandmother told me. It’s a shame that less and less people are reading anything nowadays, so I really have to hand it to you. I am sure they will be very successful in their futures!

Haha, well I am sure being a mom stresses you out sometimes and it is not easy. I feel bad for my parents for having to deal with me when I don’t behave, and thinking that one day I might have to help raise children to become responsible adults is terrifying, I respect my parents for their hard work, and think that they too are cool in their own ways. Age shouldn’t determine who you are as a person. Everyone is cool in their own ways!

I am really glad to have found such an amazing anime/manga blogger and will continue to support you! Never give up on your dreams:)
