This is what’s happening this week in the news:
Crunchyroll is partnering with Sumitomo Corporation to create a new company that focuses on anime co-production projects. There isn’t much else going on so far though — not even a name for the company.
The cast of the Yona of the Dawn stage play were revealed in costume. The play will run March 16–21 in Japan.
Ayumi Komura is launching a new manga in Shueisha’s Margaret magazine. She is the author of Mixed Vegetables, which is also licenced in the U.S by Viz Media. According to Anime News Network, the manga, Mori no Takuma-San (Takuma of the Forest), will be launched in the 22nd issue of the magazine and also be featured on the cover.
FUJI TV, a major television network in Japan, has announced it will premiere the country’s first lesbian-themed television drama, titled Transit Girls. According to DramaFever: “The story revolves around two girls, aged 18 and 21, who are played by popular actress Sairi Ito and model Yui Sakuma. They become stepsisters when their parents get remarried, and though they clash at first, they eventually fall in love with each other.” There is some controversy surrounding the show’s perception.
Touya Mikanagi’s Root REXX Honey Melody manga ended recently. The final chapter was published on Ishijinsha’s Zero-Sum Online website. The chapters are available for free on the website, but chapters 2–7 will be available until Dec. 10. According to ANN: “The story centers on the rock band REXX whose debut single became an explosive hit. The all-male group gains popularity by word of mouth and begins to gather attention around the world. But without putting out a second single, suddenly the band announces that it is going on indefinite hiatus. Before long, the band started to be called as a legend.”
Korean actor Lee Jun Ki will be going to Hollywood. Apparently, he will be in the final installment of the movie franchise Resident Evil. No details on his role, but I’m excited!
The Anthem of the Heart will be screening in the U.S. and Canada beginning Nov. 1. The 22-minute English-subtitled preview is available thanks to Aniplex of America. The story: “Jun is a girl whose words have been sealed away. She was once a happy girl, but because of a [certain thing] she said when she was very young, her family was torn apart. One day, the egg fairy appeared in front of her and sealed away her ability to talk in order to stop her from hurting anybody else. Since this traumatic experience, Jun lives in the shadows away from the limelight. But, one day she is nominated to become an executive member of the ‘community outreach council.’ On top of that, Jun is also appointed to play the main lead in their musical…”
Arina Tanemura (The Gentlemen’s Alliance) and Yui Kikuta (Mahou Tsukai no Neko) are collaborating on a new manga titled Moment Lyle (Shunkan Lyle). It will begin in the December issue of Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Zero-Sum on Oct. 28. According to Anime News Network: “The fantasy manga takes place in a mysterious kingdom ruled by magic. The tagline on the announcement in the November issue reads, ‘When you opened your eyes, there was an instant of a moment.’ The magazine’s announcement had also called the manga ‘a wizard story where crossing through space-time is forbidden.'”
Library Wars: The Last Mission is still dominating Japan’s box office during its second weekend. It earned almost 174,000,000 yen Oct. 17-18, giving it a total of 850 million yen.
La Corda d’Oro 4 will be released in Japan Feb. 25, 2016 on the Playstation Vita. The game features the same cast and characters and will continue the story of the previous game.
The cast of the Alice in the Country of Hearts musical’s revival performance have been announced. The show will run in Japan in February.
