Shōjo Sensei: White Day

Everyone in North America knows about Valentine’s Day on February 14th. It’s the most popular holiday for couples. In Japan, it is traditional for just the girls to give chocolate to boys. It is also considered polite to give return gifts in Japanese culture, thus the holiday for White Day was born. Officially founded in 1978 by the National Confectionery Industry Association in Japan, White Day is the official holiday for boys to give return gifts to the girls in their lives.

I first read about White Day in the manga D N Angel. Main character Daisuke wants to give a special present to his “sacred maiden” Risa for White Day. Daisuke’s mom gives him a white ribbon. When he tries to give the ribbon to Risa, he realizes he’s lost it, and Risa rejects his feelings, confessing that she loves his alternate personality, Dark. This causes Dark’s personality to become dominant in Daisuke’s body, and Dark goes out of his way to give a white tie and a kiss to Risa’s twin sister Riku. While kissing Riku, Daisuke’s own personality reemerges due to his true feelings for her. Ahh, young love.

White Day is declared to be on March 14th, allowing for one month between it and Valentine’s day. It is suspected that the term “White Day” came from the original confectionery marketing of marshmallows. Shortly after that, white chocolate also became popular. Now a days it is common to receive candy, jewelry, flowers, and even lingerie as White Day gifts.
