Honest, intelligent news and reviews for manga romantics
Tsubaki-Chou Lonely Planet is currently running in Margaret magazine, and has 2 tankobans in Japan. Mika Yamamori has quickly become a favorite mangaka amongst the scanlator community. She has been very VOCAL about her work being stolen and used without her permission, and rightly so. I think it’s time to get some of her work in North America legitimately.
The Gist: Ohno Fumi is a poor 2nd year high school student. Because of her father’s debts, she’s kicked out of her own home and has to rely on her own connections to survive. Thus begins her life as a live-in housekeeper for a reclusive writer.
The “Give Me” Factor: Mika Yamamori has really gorgeous art. I love her colored work. She’s good at emotional tension in her stories as well. Her series Daytime Shooting Star was really popular, but it had a teacher-student relationship. That makes it a taboo topic to North America. This series, Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet, still has an age-gap relationship. Yet it’s in the realm of Dengeki Daisy when it comes to the relationship. He’s an early 20-something writer, she’s a high school girl. It’s not that big of an age gap.
The Audience Reception: The story of poor Fumi falling for the writer she works for is a kind of Cinderella story. I think young girls would really enjoy this story, and be excited in the fact that they are finally getting Mika Yamamori in print.
I’d like to see any of her works licensed also! I don’t support scans so it’s a shame that the author herself has to call out on those who do. She loses money. Even if it were licensed, Shojo Beat have made it clear that scanlations lose them money for there will always be someone who would rather read the scans than support an English release. I hope scans are stopped.
