Viz Announces “So Cute It Hurts!!” License at NYCC

At the New York Comic Convention Thursday, Viz announced the license for “So Cute It Hurts!!” known as Kobayashi ga Kawai Sugite Tsurai!! by popular Sho-Comi mangaka Go Ikeyamada. Ikeyamada’s other well known works include Suki Desu Suzuki-kun!!, Uwasa no Midori-kun!!, and Moe Kare!! none of which have been licensed in English.

What’s It About?  So Cute It Hurts!! is a high school gender-bending love polygon story. Fraternal twins Megumu and Mitsuru, brother and sister, attend separate high schools that are one gender only. One day Mitsuru decides to switch places, putting him at the all girls school, while Megumu has to navigate the all boys domain. While playing other genders, the two fall in love at first sight. What fate awaits them as they navigate the trials of first love?

Volume 1 Flower Comics

I’ve been waiting for a series by Go Ikeyamada because her stories are so entertaining to read. There’s a good mix of drama with comedy, and the romances are always unpredictable. Her characters are iconic with quirky personality traits. So Cute It Hurts!! doesn’t disappoint. Twins of opposite gender switching places – you know there will be so many awkward and comical situations that occur. Guys and girls falling for them, thinking they like the same sex – it’s a gender bender trope but always funny to watch play out. You can see in illustrations that the boy crush has an eye patch, so he’s got a sight issue, and there’s something going on with the girl crush as well which makes for great story development. Then there are the strings of fate that Ikeyamada uses to tie all the characters together. So Cute It Hurts!! will no doubt be a very entertaining story.  Volume 3 of the manga even had a bundled OVA in Japan.

So when will we see it in North America? Viz has set a release date of June 2015 for So Cute It Hurts!!
