What I’m Watching: March

The Imperial Doctress

The Imperial Doctress

Imperial Doctress: The Dan family spans many generations of doctors, with many past ancestors who were imperial doctors. But when powerful enemies frame their family, the royal court passes a ruling that future generations of the Dan family are forbidden from practicing medicine. The kind, intelligent and talented Dan Yun Xian (Liu Shi Shi) secretly learns the art of traditional Chinese medicine from her grandmother and helps to cure plagues and illnesses among the common people. Yun Xian overcomes many societal obstacles in her passion and pursuit of medicine. And when she meets Emperor Zhu Qi Zhen (Wallace Huo), he wields a great deal of influence in Yun Xian fulfilling her destiny to become the first imperial doctor during the Ming Dynasty. “The Imperial Doctress” is a 2016 Chinese drama series directed by Lee Kwok Lap.

Some of the comments about the show include not liking the production or the acting, but neither bother me. In fact, so far, this is a really great show and I’m looking to see what kind of drama awaits Dan Yun Xian. There’s a love triangle on the horizon, and it might be a dangerous one! I’m glad I don’t live in feudal China. This is my first introduction to the rather handsome actor Wallace Huo. This show reminds me a bit of Snow White with the Red Hair. With 50 episodes, I hope this show doesn’t lose steam.

Snow White with the Red Hair Season 2

Snow White with the Red Hair Season 2

Snow White with the Red Hair Second Season: In the kingdom of Tanbarun lives Shirayuki, an independent and strong-willed young woman. Her resourceful intelligence has led her become a skilled pharmacist, but her most defining trait is her shock of beautiful apple-red hair. Her dazzling mane gets her noticed by the prince of the kingdom, but instead of romancing her, he demands she be his concubine. Shirayuki refuses, chops off her lovely locks, and runs away to the neighboring kingdom of Clarines. There, she befriends a young man named Zen, who, SURPRISE, is also a prince, although with a much better temperament than the previous one. Watch as Shirayuki finds her place in the new kingdom, and in Zen’s heart.

I am finally starting to watch the second season of Snow White and the Red Hair. I can’t NOT watch it after such a great first season. It’s several episodes in and I’m marathoning this show as quickly as possible. Laura and I did a review of the second part of the first season, after my initial review. Although it’s been awhile since I watched the show, it starts off reminding me why I love the show but am nervous about the impending drama. I’ve yet to finish the manga, but I hope Shirayuki and Zen get a happy ending (although I think Obi is growing on me even more, now).

Fuller House: The Tanner family’s adventures continue as DJ Tanner-Fuller shares a home with her sister Stephanie and friend Kimmy who help raise her three boys.

Neither anime nor drama, but this goes back to my childhood so I’m including it. All thirteen episodes are available on Netflix, but I’m pacing myself. I know you are supposed to marathon the show, but I prefer to enjoy it slowly. So far, I give it a positive rating with some minor quibbles of trying to tie the new show back to the old one so much. I love the intro, and I don’t mind the throwback to the past but that should be carefully done. Stephanie was my favorite character in the original show, but I’m finding that Kimmy is winning my heart this time around. The new kids (DJ’s three sons and Kimmy’s daughter) aren’t that appealing to me, as I’m most interested in seeing the lives of the original characters. Also, I’m still rooting for a DJ and Steve romance.
