Anime for Shoujo Fans – Summer 2016

Some of you who are regular readers may have noticed that we skipped the Spring 2016 anime season. That’s because the spring anime season offerings for shoujo fans were “bleghh” – to put it nicely. Thankfully it’s being followed up with this promising summer schedule, which has anime for every type of shoujo fan. Here’s what’s on our watch list this summer:

Simulcasted in North America

Orange – TMS Entertainment

Orange_Anime_2016

One day, Naho Takamiya receives a letter written to herself from ten years in the future. As Naho reads on, the letter recites the exact events of the day, including the transfer of a new student into her class named Kakeru Naruse.

The Naho from ten years later repeatedly states that she has many regrets, and she wants to fix these by making sure the Naho from the past can make the right decisions—especially regarding Kakeru. What’s more shocking is that she discovers that ten years later, Kakeru will no longer be with them. Future Naho asks her to watch over him closely.

I love this manga, and so this series is at the top of my list. I look forward to watching the story animated in vivid color.

Series premiers on July 4, 2016. It will be streaming on Crunchyroll.

First Love Monster – Studio Deen

First Love Monster

Nikaido Kaho is a daughter of a rich family and her whole life everyone’s been nice to her. When moving to her new high school dormitory, she almost gets hit by a truck but is saved by a boy. It’s love at first sight for Kaho but when asking him his name, he tells her she’s weird. Kaho is shocked since it’s the first time anyone’s ever said mean things to her. Soon enough, she finds out that the boy who saved her lives in the same dormitory and so she bravely confesses her love. The boy says his name is Kanade and agrees to go out with her. Unfortunately, the following day Kaho finds out that her first boyfriend is a 5th grader.

This manga was not my cup of tea, but I will be giving the anime a shot. It might be a different story with animation. We’ll see how it goes – if it gets dropped or not.

Series premiers on July 2, 2016. It will be streaming on Funimation.

DAYS – Pony Canyon

DAYS

The series is about two boys named Tsukushi and Jin. Tsukushi is a boy with no special talent or traits while Jin is considered a soccer genius. On one stormy night, Jin meets Tsukushi, and they get dragged into the world of soccer.

Okay this one is a sports series and aimed at a shounen audience. But seriously, it’s a prime target for yaoi fantasy. In fact, I’ve seen manga caps of it on tumblr highlighting some of those moments. The manga won Best Shounen in the Kodansha Manga Awards for 2016.

Series premiers on July 3, 2016. Simulcasted on Crunchyroll.

Cheer Boys – Brain’s Base

CheerBoys_Anime

The story revolves around the “slightly odd and cute” members of a cheerleading squad at a men’s university.

This looks like a great yaoi fantasy series. Imagine “Free”  but with boys cheerleading.

Series premiers on July 5, 2016. Simulcasted on Funimation.

B-Project: Kodou*Ambitious – MAGES

BProject

Tsubaki is a new hire in the A&R department of the major recording company Gandala Music. Tsubaki is immediately assigned to oversee the idol unit “B-PROJECT,” which is made up of three idol groups: Kitakore, Thrive, and MooNs. This is Tsubaki’s first job, and she gets involved in various incidents and accidents as she deals with this group of young men who each have their own differing personalities.

This series caught my attention when I saw that it is executive produced by T.M. Revolution. That sounds interesting and makes me want to hear the music. The character designs are by Devils and Realist creator Utako Yukahiko. There is a lot of good talent pooled to make this series, so I’m anxious to see it.

Series premiers on July 3, 2016. Simulcasted on Crunchyroll.

Tsukiuta – THE ANIMATION – Studio Pierrot

Tsukiuta

In the anime series, the members of Six Gravity and Procellarum are all living in the same dorm building. Hajime Mutsuki and Haru Yayoi, the oldest members of Six Gravity, are first year university students. Each episode of the series will feature a different main character. Each character represents a month of the year.

Anthropomorphized months as singing bishies – ’nuff said. This is recommended for fans of StarMyu and Uta-Pri.

Series premiers on July 6, 2016. It will be streaming on Funimation.

Scared Rider Xechs – Satelight

ScaredRiderXechS_Anime

The Blue World, which symbolizes reason, is under constant attack by the creatures called the Nightfly O’Note originating from the Red World, symbolizing instinct. Akira Asagi, the 17-year-old protagonist who is a researcher at Blue World, is nominated to lead the war at Ryuukyuu LAG, a proud defense facility on the islands of Ishigaki and Iriomote. She meets the sixth combat unit “IS,” which was formed four years after a fierce battle that annihilated the fifth unit. Akari must lead these six riders, also called the Scared Rider Xechs, to fight against the other world while at the same time deepening the relationship among them.

Oooh. Reverse harem science-fiction adventure story. Good looking guys too. This would be ideal to pull your significant other in to watch with you.

Series premiers on July 6, 2016. Simulcast will be on Funimation.

Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu – EMT²

FudanshiKoukou_anime_2016

Sakaguchi is a high school boy and also a “fudanshi” who loves boys-love stories. He hangs out with his friends, a fujoshi named Rumi, his gay friend Yuujirou, fellow fudanshi Daigo, and his “normal” friend Nakamura.

An anime about a “fudanshi” -guy who loves BL. I love how his one friend is called “normal” because he doesn’t align with the same romantic interest. Haha. This has got to be entertaining!

Series premiers July 5, 2016. Simulcast will stream on Crunchyroll.

Sweetness & Lightning – TMS Entertainment

SweetLight_Anime_2016

Kouhei Inuzuka is a teacher who has been caring for his little daughter on his own since his wife’s death. He’s no good at cooking, so he and his daughter Tsumugi have been eating packaged meals from the convenience store. A series of events lead him one evening to a restaurant run by the mother of one of his students, Kotori. Her mother isn’t there, but Kotori does her best to feed them both. It turns out Kotori is often alone since her parents are divorced and her mother is frequently not around. The three of them begin to meet and cook tasty food together.

We’re getting the manga and the anime in the same month! Must check out this foodie anime with cute kid and dad.

Series premiers on July 5, 2015. Simulcast will stream on Crunchyroll.

Ozmafia!! – Creators in Pack TOKYO

ozmafia.png

The anime will feature an original story from the game on which it is based.

The series will be anime shorts based off of the game. Those who enjoyed the visual novel will want to check it out!

Series premiers on July 7, 2016. Simulcast will stream on Crunchyroll.

Amanchu! – J.C. Staff

anmachu_anime

Hikari Kohinata is a cheerful 15-year-old girl who lives near the ocean and she spends much of her time diving as a result. On her first day of high school, she meets a teacher who also likes scuba diving. There’s also a 16-year-old classmate, Futaba, who gets dragged along in Hikari’s maelstrom as soon as they meet at school. Most of the manga so far details the relationship between the two girls, which quickly seems to move into romantic two girl friendship-territory.

So this is listed as shounen, but it might also qualify for yuri fantasizing. Check it out if you like yuri.

Series premiers July 6, 2016. Simulcast will stream on Crunchyroll.

You know, I’m highly impressed with the amount of content that is accessible for the shoujo fan audience. It’s a lot more than was available say, three years ago? I actually had 3 series on a wishlist, but they were all announced for simulcast before the post published – I had to edit it! I’m pretty sure that anime companies are getting the message that shoujo series have a good size fan base. Some of these series may be labeled shounen or seinen, but we chose series that would appeal to fans of shoujo anime and manga. (Previously I would have said girls, but we know there are plenty of guys out there that like shoujo anime and manga, too!)
