Boys Over Flowers Season 2 – Chapters 1-6 – Yoko Kamio

If you’ve not known, Viz is actually digitally simul-publishing the sequel to Boys Over Flowers by Yoko Kamio. Hana Nochi Hare – Hanadan Next Season is the official title, but most are just referring to it as Boys Over Flowers Season 2. It comes out every two weeks in the Jump+ online magazine. Because of that people can’t decide if this is a shounen or shoujo manga. Whatever it is, I know some of you are missing out! It’s for FREE my friends, so you should be reading this one up just like all your favorite scanlations. It’s from the best-selling shoujo mangaka of all time!

As of this post, I’ve read up to chapter 6 of Hana Nochi Hare – Hanadan Next Season. That’s given me enough material to decide if this series is a take it or leave it. But first I’ll give you the details of the story so you have an idea of what it’s about.

The Gist: Eitoku Academy has a legacy of being a school for the ultimate elite, the best of the best. And the most rich and powerful students there have formed the Correct 5 clique to maintain the integrity of their school. Unfortunately, new student Oto Edogawa doesn’t have the pedigreed background of her peers and has to work part-time jobs to help make ends meet. Will a chance encounter with Haruto Kaguragi, the leader of the Correct 5, put everything at risk?

The Review: If you’ve read Boys Over Flowers you might be wondering how this story connects. Haruto Kaguragi happens to worship the Flower Four, especially Tsukasa Domyouji. Now that the F4 have graduated he feels he must take Domyouji’s place and leads the Correct Five. The Correct Five are a harsh group that feel they have to weed out the members of their elite academy, and our main protagonist Oto is trying desperately to remain off their radar. Already we have a direct parallel between Boys Over Flowers and this sequel – Rich boy running the school and poor girl protagonist.

I figure the editors are saying, “If it’s not broken don’t fix it” and this is going to use a lot of the same plot elements as Boys Over Flowers. That’s fine with me as long as Kamio keeps it short. No amnesia this time, okay?

There are elements of this series that I like better and feel make an improvement on the original. For instance, Kaguragi is supposed to be this cool guy, but Kamio shows us his weaknesses right at the beginning of the story. Even though he wants to get rid of Oto, she has dirt on him, so he can’t. Then it drives him crazy that she won’t fall for him. That rich boy getting his come-uppance is what makes readers love the heroine so much. Then there’s the scene where Oto hits Kaguragi with a slab of meat! There’s a great amount of comedy in this series that sets apart this story from the first and makes it enjoyable on its own. By the time I read through chapter six I was hooked. The chapter ends with a reveal that that makes the story even more complex. I’m really enjoying this series so far and look forward to reading what Kamio dishes out next.

The Art: Kamio has great drawing talent and it has transitioned well to a digital medium. While you can still see her style her drawing has positively evolved. Hana Nochi Hare – Hanadan Next Season has good character transitions that accent the funny moments as well as the serious ones. There haven’t been very many colored pieces because we’re only seeing digital, but the paneling and line art look great.

The Audience: It’s rated T for Teen, and is perfect for that audience. However I’m sure all the older readers who followed her first series will be reading this as well. Maybe it will pull in male readers too, since it’s in Jump+. No matter the gender, it’s sure to create a whole new young audience of Kamio fans.

The Media: Hana Nochi Hare – Hanadan Next Season is currently running in Jump+ digital manga magazine. It is up to Chapter 6, and will be releasing every two weeks simultaneously with Japan.

  • Just found out about it and was pretty happy… but I can’t read it because the website is not available in my country. This is so mean ;w;

  • Where can I find 1-6. The link after the media isn’t working. I really don’t want to pay 6.99 for each manga.
