First Impressions: Meteor Prince vol. 1- Meca Tanaka

Meteor Prince Volume 1

Meteor Prince Volume 1

Meteor Prince, translated from Otome to Meteo, originally ran in LaLa magazine in 2013. This short two volume series is brought to North America by Viz’s Shojo Beat imprint. Volume 1 was released January 6, 2015.

Publisher Synopsis: Strange accidents always seem to happen around Hako Natsuno—so much so that she’s been dubbed the “Queen of Bad Luck.” It’s hardly surprising then that a naked alien prince falls from the sky to tell her that out of all the girls in the universe, he’s come to Earth to mate with her. Does this mean Hako’s luck has changed, or…?

Impressions: I was excited we were finally getting something from Meca Tanaka, but I had no idea what was in store when I picked up this first volume of Meteor Prince. Hahaha! The first chapter had me giggling so hard because of the awkward introduction of our naked alien prince and the corny comedic commentary of the side characters. It was almost like an episode of “Mork and Mindy”. (Google it if you don’t know.) The prince from planet Yupita is named Io, and his incessant questioning to mate with Hako allows Tanaka to poke fun at all the shoujo romance tropes in manga and other dating rituals we have in society. The story itself is quite cute, with Io wanting to make Hako fall in love with him, and Hako trying to avoid “mating” with Io as soon as possible. Her friends are really great supporting characters, too. I love that they and Hako are members of the Occult Research Club because of her “cursed luck” and are trying to find ways to help Hako break it. The Club President character was just a funny riot, trying to help Io court Hako, and her friend Mat-chan is a really great personality as well, always trying to keep the “pervert alien” away. 🙂

The art in this series is just adorable – perfect for such a whimsical series. Character designs are lighthearted and cheery, with Io even having stars as reflections in his irises. 🙂 I’ve seen Tanaka’s Faster Than a Kiss and these characters look different from that series, so I was really pleased. The colored images are bright and fun, too.

Heart of Manga Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

All in all I’m looking forward picking up volume 2. Meteor Prince is a fun series with plenty of romantic and comedic moments to appease shoujo readers. Who knows, maybe we’ll get more Meca Tanaka if it does well!

  • Great review! I was wondering if I should pick it up, and now I know that I should 🙂 Just worried that for only 2 volumes, not much development will happen to sell me on the pairing.

    • Oh, it’s really cute. There are plot devices in the first volume that make you want them to be together. Especially the ending of the volume. Won’t tell you more, or that’s spoiling it for you. ;P

      • Thank you! Then I will check out the first volume! 😀 Haha, if only manga/anime weren’t so expensive!

  • I totally agree. I got this volume because of the author and it doesn’t disappoint 🙂 This first volume is a hoot and the characters are fun to read. I also look forward to vol 2.
