Game Recommendations: Visual Novels

We’ve got awhile to go before Aksys delivers new Otomate games in 2017, and since the announcement in July, we haven’t heard much else about the games. I don’t know about you but I’ve been a bit antsy about it, so if you need something to keep your mind off of next year, here are a couple of recommended games to play.

Solstice

Not an otome game, but it’s recommended by reviewers for its intriguing plot and good character development. This game is by MoaCube and came out in March of this year.

Summary from Steam: A magnificent city in the middle of a frozen wasteland, cut off from the world by raging blizzards. Inhabited only by a small group of misfits, who either can’t or don’t want to leave for the dead winter season.

When the local madman goes missing, an ambitious doctor on a contract and a mysterious young woman, who arrived with the last dog sled caravan, start questioning the true nature of the city’s splendor…

Dandelion – Wishes brought to you –

The publisher, Cheritz, is a Korean company with some great artwork in its games. It also published the well-known game “Nameless: the one thing you must recall”.

Story from Steam: Heejung Kim moved out from her mom’s house, who is obsessed with her education. Heejung tries to find her real dream life. Having the impression that everything would go well, she has been living a life obsessed with grades.

Majoring in business administration, average language skills, not that popular, decent school grades.

The only thing she is interested in is the Art Club.

As graduation approaches, she starts to worry about her future…

One day, Heejung wakes up to animal sounds…..?

After she finds these mysterious animals her story begins….

Re: Alistair

This is a free game by indie developer, Sakevisual. They are also the creators of the game Backstage Pass. They are usually one of the first games to be recommended to play and you don’t need to spend a dime.

Summary from official website: Merui loves video games, especially her favorite MMORPG, Rivenwell Online. Merui also has a very short temper, so when some JERK named Alistair steals a rare item from her, she’s determined to exact revenge on him. Unfortunately, she has no idea who he is in real life. But hey, that’s never stopped anyone, right? Take control of Merui and make new friends, balance schoolwork and fun, go shopping, search for the culprit, and maybe even discover a new romance.

Cupid

This is a mature 18+ otome game with very dark themes by developer Fervent (creator of the game “The Belfegor House” which is currently in production). It’s also free and available on Steam. It’s got mostly good ratings on Steam, but avoid playing if you are sensitive as there is some adult situations and blood and gore.

Summary from official website: Rosa’s best friend, Catherine, is dead and she is sure Catherine’s betrothed, Marquis Guilleme is to blame. Mother says so. Mother says he has to pay with his life. Although, she knows by now Guilleme is no ordinary man. He is tainted. A monster. He cannot be killed by usual means. To seek the best revenge, she must find out all his secrets and destroy him. But will her own dark desires consume her or liberate her?

No matter. Mother will tell her what to do.

Set in the romantic 18th century France, play as the third person point of view character of Mother — a unique twist to the visual novel decision making medium. Decide the fate of the characters, scold or console, argue or assent… Just don’t be surprised if they start to question your commands.

Mystic Messenger

An interesting twist on the otome game genre, Cheritz’s Mystic Messenger game, available for iOS and Android, lets you chat with attractive men. This game was released in June 2016 and is free.

Summary from website: You were looking for a game app just to kill some time and stumbled upon an app called “Mystic Messenger”. It sounded interesting so you downloaded it. Once you opened it up, you found yourself chatting with someone nicknamed “Unknown”. “Unknown” persuaded you to go to some studio apartment. As soon as you walk into the apartment, your app is suddenly connected to a mystic chat with attractive guys?!
