Kodansha Shoujo/Josei Digital Delights – May 2017

Well now, Kodansha just keeps putting the digital titles out there, and more new licenses to boot!  Here’s what has been licensed in the most recent months that you should definitely check out!

Drowning Love ( Oboreru Knife) by George Asakura

Publisher Synopsis: “I don’t know what this feeling is … I don’t know what I should do now … all I know is, I want him.”

They fight one another, they chase after one another, they capture one another—a turbulent tale of preteens on the brink of self-destruction, masterfully brought to life by George Asakura!

Heart of Manga: I read this series a few years ago and couldn’t put it down at the time. The story is riveting and the art work is nice as well.  Oboreru Knife got a live action movie adaptation last year (2016) in Japan.  Here’s a PV to give you an idea of the story.

Aoba-kun’s Confessions by Ema Toyama

Publisher Synopsis: Mayo is a high school loner who has issues with communication. She starts a peculiar job at a “Listening House,” where she silently listens to people’s problems. But her first client is Aoba-kun, the star of the basketball team who is seemingly perfect! Could Aoba-kun and his complicated situation be too much for Mayo to handle?! So begins the secret relationship between the girl who lacks communication skills and the guy who seems to have it all. Enjoy the first volume of this heart-warming love story.

Heart of Manga: Aoba-kun’s Confessions is a newer title by Ema Toyama. I’ve not read this one in particular. It’s Ema Toyama, though, so it should be funny and endearing. I’m kind of surprised we didn’t get the license for the love hotel series – Watanuki-san ni wa Boku ga Tarinai. That one is hilarious. Maybe it’s in the works. ^^

Our Precious Conversations (Boku to Kimi no Taisetsu na Hanashi) by Robico

Publisher Synopsis: Nozomi Aizawa has has kept her feelings for her schoolmate Azuma-kun a secret for quite a while, but the time has come for her to finally confess. His response, though, is far from ordinary! Led in circles by his hilarious tangents, these two awkward teenagers find themselves growing ever closer while muddling through misunderstandings and off-topic rants. When the airheaded stalker Aizawa-san finally connects with the petulant know-it-all Azuma-kun, the result is a romantic comedy worth talking about!

Heart of Manga: Our Precious Conversations is Robico’s new serialization after My Little Monster. I’ve not read any of it, but here’s my chance, right?  If you are a fan of My Little Monster, you’ll want to check out this title for sure.

Kasane by Daruma Matsura

Synopsis from Publisher: Kasane’s face is so hideous, you couldn’t bear to look twice at her—and her ugliness has forced her to walk a harsh path in life. But her mother left her something: a tube of lipstick. The power of this lipstick will change everything about her downtrodden life.

Heart of Manga: This is a license I’ve wanted to see for a while. A goth-thriller style story that will keep you on the edge of your seat to find out what happens next.

Real Girl (3D Kanojo) by Mao Nanami

Synopsis from Publisher: Hikari Tsutsui (a.k.a “Tsuttsun”) is a high school student who is content with his virtual life of anime and video games. One day, he gets stuck cleaning the pool with Iroha, a real live girl who is stylish, sassy and known to be easy with boys … and she aggressively approaches him! Tsuttsun, who has few friends and lives in his own world, finds himself smitten by the confident and wild Iroha … and his whole world is turned upside down!! It’s the awkward and pure love story of a boy who experiences relationship for the first time.

Heart of Manga: I’ve read chapters of this series in Dessert magazine. It’s interesting because the boy is the main protagonist and the story is told from his point of view. (Not very common in shoujo manga) It recently finished its run, but was in the magazine since 2011. There’s a lot of story to read and I’m looking forward to that.

What do you think? Any of these you’re going to check out digitally? Or that you’ve been wanting a license for?

  • Does anyone know the status of This is a Love Story ( Kore wa Koi no Hanashi) by Chika? Kodansha announced a few weeks ago that it would release digitally at the beginning of this month, but I have yet to see it available for purchase.

    • Looks like they haven’t put it out yet. They often delay titles – in my experience you can’t take Kodansha’s dates as solid. So keep looking. It may come out in the next week or two.
