My Favorites: Part 2 – My Manga Collection

So the other day I promised Mary I would show her my collection, but I thought it would be easier to write up a post on it. 🙂

I’ve been reading and collecting manga since 2006. I started out searching for used books that were half price. Now I buy books when a certain publisher is on sale and I pre-order three months ahead at a time. I usually end up with the first couple of volumes of a shoujo series.

I had no idea how much manga I owned until we moved a couple years ago. I had one Ikea bookshelf in my bedroom that was double stacked with volumes. But I also used the bottom drawer of my dresser to store books, and the bottom drawer of our armoire in our bedroom. I about died when I had to pack them up in boxes. I ended up with 12 boxes of manga! My hubby was shocked, too.

When we got to the new house, it was a given that I needed a definite space to put my library in besides our bedroom. In the spare bedroom I designated a wall for bookshelves. That room has become my office/craft room/hidey hole. It’s also where Grammy stays when she visits. Anyway, I installed the shelves myself so I took pictures of them as I was finishing organizing the books onto them. This makes up the majority of my collection.

That image is from two years ago, so now the top three shelves are almost double stacked. I think if the books were single stacked, it would take up four more shelves reaching all the way to the floor! I still don’t have an exact amount of volumes or a definite list of series. Need to make that I guess. There’s still 2 boxes of manga that are on the floor that I’m going to be selling or giving away sometime as well.

My mom recently asked me what I was going to do with all these books, eventually. I hope my daughter will read them someday. I may sell them off later in the future or I might donate them to a library or something. But for now they’re here so that I can pick them up and read them whenever I wish to. 🙂

  • Wow! Awesome! My jaws dropped… @_@ ♥ My collection’s nowhere near! Ahaha! And yeah, I need to keep my books away from sunlight to avoid fading! The pages are turning yellowish as well too. I wrap each of them resealable plastics or zip-locks.. Hehe… If you’d like you can donate them to me instead! Ahaha! Thanks for sharing, Laura-san!♥

    • Hey – my pleasure! The shelves really are all double-stacked now. I’m really grateful they haven’t fallen off the wall yet! XD I’ve sold some manga on ebay, and usually that is where I will put newer series I don’t plan to collect. So you can look for my hand me downs there: http://www.ebay.com/usr/otakuresale

Thanks for visiting, Nikki! Hope to see more of you in the future!

  • WOW!!! Thank you so much! It’s really rare to find people who say they read manga and actually buy them too. Most just read scanlations-I can understand, but if you never buy anything, that’s when I get a little disappointed. My collection is NO WHERE near as awesome as yours! And you said this wasn’t a recent picture too? I really have to say that this is amazing! I noticed you have Red River. That series is worth a lot, so make sure to keep the sunlight off them so they don’t fade in color. Same with Fruits Basket. In the lower right in a black bookcase, are those Japanese books? I can’t really tell, sorry haha. Does Grammy read them? Haha.

Thanks again, and this is amazing!!!

    • Those are actually drawing books in the black bookcase. How to Draw Manga, How to Illustrate, How to Get Published. LOL.

      • Hahaha really? That is so cool! Do you like to draw?

        • Yes. I do draw as a hobby. I have a deviant art page under Ellesensei if you want to see my stuff. I have a couple of pieces I want to get printed and sell. I used to want to try to a draw comic, but I realized it’s too much work! 😀 I’d rather do more traditional pieces.
