New Shoujo Manga Licenses – Anime Expo 2016

This past weekend was the hugely attended Anime Expo in Los Angeles, California. Many publishers had announcements about licenses acquired, but I’m only going to list the shoujo ones here.

Suijin no Hanayome – The Water Dragon’s Bride by Rei Toma

Licensed by Viz Media for their Shojo Beat imprint

waterdragonsbride

Synopsis from publisher: In the blink of an eye, a modern-day girl named Asahi is whisked away from her warm and happy home and stranded in a strange and mysterious world where she is sacrificed to a water dragon god! What plans are in store for her, and what will happen when she comes face to face with this god?

The series is ongoing in Cheese! magazine. It has been compiled into three volumes as of April, 2016. Shojo Beat will begin publishing the first volume in North America in Spring 2017.

Yumemiru Taiyou – Dreamin’ Sun by Ichigo Takano

Licensed by Seven Seas

dreaminsun

Synopsis from publisher:  Shimana is a high school student whose mother has passed away and whose father has remarried and had a son with his new wife. Not knowing where she belongs, Shimana runs away and runs into a kimono-clad man in a park. He offers Shimana a place to live, but she must abide by three conditions in order to live there.

The series originally ran in Betsuma magazine in Japan and belonged to Shueisha. It was recently acquired by Futabasha publishing, thus they are able to license it to North America. Dreamin’ Sun is a total of 10 volumes and will debut on North American shelves in May 2017.

The following is not technically shoujo, but will most likely appeal to said audience:

Kijitora Neko no Koume-san – Plum Crazy! Tales of A Tiger-Striped Cat by Natsumi Hoshino

Licensed by Seven Seas

PlumCrazyNeko

Synopsis from Publisher: This manga centers on a cat named Plum who lives with her family and is happy until an obnoxious white kitten joins the household.

The series currently runs in Shonengahosha’s Nekopanchi magazine. There are a total of 14 volumes as of this past April, 2016. It will begin publishing in North America in July 2017.

I have to put a comment here. It’s concerning to me that these series are not coming out until next spring and summer. I’m not sure readers realize, but the last new license we are scheduled to get in 2016 will happen next month when we get Yona of the Dawn in August. The past couple of years we have had new series debut October through December. However, so far we have no more new ones for this year. And the next ones are not coming out until next spring? There’s still a couple of cons coming up that typically get announcements – San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con. So I’m wondering if they’re being saved for those. Guess we’ll find out later this month.

Well, any thoughts? Which one are you most looking forward to?

  • The first one that you mentioned “Suijin no Hanayome – The Water Dragon’s Bride by Rei Toma” is much alike of the korean manhwa “The bride of the Water God”. Have you read it yet? It’s nice too.

    • Yes, I have read “The Bride of the Water God”. I didn’t care for it that much. I know that “The Water Dragon’s Bride” has similarities, but I’m not sure how alike they are. I hope Rei Toma writes a better story.

  • Disappointed in the licenses. Probably won’t buy any. Hoping for licenses of Ao Haru Ride, Taiyou no Ie, Love so Life and Namaikizakari in the future.

    • Yep, I’d buy all the ones you listed! Hoping for more promising announcements from Viz in the next few months.

  • I am so hyped and happy for the licensing of Dreamin’ Sun!! I really wanted this series to get licensed and thought it will never happen, but here it is now!!

    • Ya, I’m really thankful that Futabasha got the rights to it from Shueshia.

      • I don’t fully understand how the manga publishers operate, but I am definitely glad that Seven Seas got the rights to publish it and are actually going to release it in North America!! It’ll be a long wait for me *sigh*, but I will wait ever so patiently.
Additionally, Suijin no Hanayome looks like an interesting manga :). I’ll be sure to check it out!

        • Shueshia and Shogakukan work strictly through Viz media in North America. That means it would have had to be licensed by Viz if we were to get it in North America.

Since Futabasha got it in Japan, they were able to work with a different publisher – in this case Seven Seas. That’s why we were able to get Orange as well.

  • None of them. I was hoping for something good. They are such a great mangas out there.

    • Haha. There are many of us out here that agree with you!!
