Lot’s of exciting news this week. Don’t mind if I start off with one of my top news announcements:
Yona of the Dawn will be licensed by Viz Media. The manga, which has an anime that ran this past summer on Crunchyroll, will be released starting Summer 2016.
Viz also picked up Everyone’s Getting Married, which runs in Petit Comic. The manga series by Izumi Miyazono, according to Viz, features a “successful career woman Asuka Takanashi has an old-fashioned dream of getting married and becoming a housewife. After her long-term boyfriend breaks up with her to pursue his own career goals, she encounters Ryu Nanami, a popular newscaster at PTV. Asuka and Ryu get along well, but the last thing he wants is to ever get married. This level-headed pair who want the opposite things in life should never get involved, except…”
Toei Company introduced a new musical duo known as Eight of Triangle. The all-male virtual duo is releasing their song heart to erode digitally on Nov. 4. Concerts, a CD, and merchandise are also planned. You can check out their promotional video for “heart to erode.”
The romantic comedy shoujo manga, Nijiiro Days, by Minami Mizuno is being adapted to an anime set to air January 2016. There are also plans to debut a game app on iOS and Android next year. According to ANN, the “manga centers on a group of four male high school students who are close friends: Natsuki, Tomoya, Keiichi, and Tsuyoshi. The four boys have no club activities, and they hurry through their studies so they can spend their days having fun. Their main topic of interest: love. Natsuki has an unrequited crush on Anna, a girl from another class, and his friends keep meddling in their relationship.”
Hakusensha’s LaLa magazine announced a new chapter of Vampire Knight manga, by Matsuri Hino, to run in the January 2015 issue of LaLaDX. It publishes Dec. 10. The 42-page chapter is described as “a story about Kaname’s awakening, and of memories of lost time.”
Dogenzaka Lab has released an otome game on steam! The Men of Yoshiwara (created by D3Publisher), was previously available to English users only on iOS and Android. However, now it’s on sale (40 percent off) until Oct. 21. The PC version includes all the main and sub scenarios of the mobile version. The game is also available, in Japanese, on the PS Vita.
George Asakura’s Oboreru Knife manga is getting a live-action film to be released next fall. According to ANN, “The manga tells the story of Natsume, a 6th-grade girl who has to move from Tokyo to a decidedly different town in the countryside. Upon meeting a boy named Kōichirō there, ‘something’ stirs inside here. The story depicts a ‘teen heart on the brink of ruin,’ including the conflict and build-up.” The manga runs in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Friend magazine. Del Rey previously published part of Asakawa’s A Perfect Day for Love Letters in 2005.
Heirs, a popular Korean drama starring Lee Min Ho, Park Shin Hye, and Kim Woo Bin, is getting a movie expected to release in late 2016. There is no confirmation yet on whether the original cast will be returning for the movie.
Kazune Kawahara, creator of My Love Story and High School Debut, will be launching a new manga in January in Shueisha’s Bessatsu Margaret magazine. Both My Love Story and High School Debut are published in English.
There is a new trailer and promotional video for the live-action film version of Ichigo Takano’s Orange manga.
A Silent Voice manga by Yoshitoki Oima is being made into an anime film adaptation. The announcement was released in Kodansha’s Weekly Shounen Magazine. The manga is published in English by Kodansha Comics and is also available digitally on Crunchyroll. The story is described as the following “I wish we had never met. I wish we could meet once again. A boy who can hear, Shoya Ishida, and a transfer student who can’t, Shoko Nishimiya. One fateful day, the two meet, and Shoya leads the class in bullying Shoko. But before long, the class shifts its target from Shoko to Shoya. Years later, Shoya feels strongly that he must see Shoko once again.”
There is also a Chihayafuru live-action film trailer streaming for both movies. The first film, Chihayafuru: Kami no Ku will open March 2016 and Chihayafuru: Shimo no Ku will open April 2016.
Another film getting the live-action film treatment is Yumiwo Kobayashi’s Nigakute Amai manga. It will open next year. According to ANN, “The manga follows an office worker named Maki who is around 30 years old, and a handsome gay man named Nagisa who is a teacher at a boys’ school. Maki is a ‘carnivore woman,’ a term that means a woman who is assertive in her pursuit of men. She is attractive and great at her job, but is single and has no luck with men, and she can’t cook or clean. Nagisa is a vegetarian who excels at cooking. The manga centers on food and follows these two opposite people as they live together.”
Tired of seeing more Sailor Moon merchandise? Not me. Now there will be another round of candy compacts for 500 yen. The four dispensers are replica’s of objects from the series including the Starry Music Box and the Silver Crystal.
Speaking of Sailor Moon, Viz Media announced at Comic Con the English voice cast for the Sailor Moon S villains including Kaolinite, Mistress 9 and Eudial.
Library Wars: The Last Mission, a sequel film, based on the Library Wars novel series, had a successful weekend, topping the box office at 329 million yen. It opened at 332 theaters in Japan and ranked No. 1. This film outperformed the original film, which was released in 2013.
