Happy Marriage?! is a josei manga series that ran in Petit Comic magazine from 2009-2012. It is the first series by popular josei mangaka Maki Enjoji that we’ve gotten in English. This year we received the final volume of the manga from Shojo Beat. Now you can collect all ten volumes and have a Happy Marriage?! marathon while you cuddle in front of the tree!

What’s it about?

In order to help her father, Chiwa Takanashi agrees to an arranged marriage with the company president Hokuto Mamiya – a man she doesn’t know – at the request of Hokuto’s grandfather. Chiwa believes the arrangement isn’t binding, but her new partner seems to think otherwise. Can two strangers living together find their way to a happy marriage?!

What’s to like?

Happy Marriage?! is a good example of two stubborn people trying to make a life together. Chiwa gets dealt this arranged marriage by circumstance, and she has to come to terms with if it is a permanent thing or if it is fleeting – if her feelings will become a factor in the marriage or not. As characters, Chiwa and Hokuta tend to fall in a typical alpha male relationship. Hokuto is used to getting what he wants because of name and status. Chiwa has to decide if she’s going to fight back or submit to his demands. The bickering in this series is amusing, because it evolves the characters the more they interact with each other. The art in the series is really well drawn with attractive characters and great facial expressions. This is a series for an older age group, as it has explicit scenes and serious topics are discussed. This is a welcome change from shoujo for older readers, as it does have attractive older male characters and it is more like a smutty romance novel. Maki Enjoji does a great job of combining the comical and emotional elements of a relationship, and readers will enjoy seeing Hakuto and Chiwa battle it out or come together in the name of love.
