What I’m Watching: February 2016

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the content that’s come out lately. There is way too much to watch and not enough time. What’s also interesting is this is the first time I’ve been a Funimation-only watcher and dropped Crunchyroll. I was on the verge of getting another annual membership to Crunchyroll, but when I saw their winter lineup compared to Funimation, I changed sides. This is the first time I’ve watched Funimation so heavily, but I’m not sure if it’s worthy of an annual subscription just yet.

I doubt I will finish everything below promptly. For example, I’ve been focusing mostly on dramas, and haven’t touched the second season of Snow White with the Red Hair! I’ve also had to drop some shows that weren’t that great (*cough* Bromance *cough*) because I am busy. So although there doesn’t seem to be much going on in this list – trust me – I have a huge backlog.

Prince of Stride- Alternative

Prince of Stride- Alternative

Prince of Stride: Alternative: From MADHOUSE, the studio behind Death Note and One-Punch Man, comes a fast-paced sports anime about Stride—a mix between competitive relay races and parkour. Nana and her classmate, Takeru, are desperate to resurrect their school’s Stride Club, but if they want to recruit their wildly fast (but reckless) classmate Riku, they’ll have to catch him first.

How did Prince of Stride grab my attention while I was drowning in a sea of content? One name: Takeru Fujiwara. To be frank, I’m mostly watching the show for him and his antics, which include unintentionally molesting other characters by feeling the legs of other characters to see how good of a runner they are. It makes things quite comical. The show is excellent, though, and there are lots of bishounen characters. The animation is something I’m not accustomed to, lots of bright colors and sharp lines, but it’s a great style nonetheless.

Cheese in the Trap

Cheese in the Trap

Cheese in the Trap: Hong Seol (Kim Go Eun) isn’t the smartest or most privileged university student, but she is without a doubt hardworking and earnest. In contrast, Hong Seol’s senior, Yoo Jeong (Park Hae Jin), is a high achiever with the good looks, athleticism, and grades to prove it — but he harbors a dark side. Even stranger, an unlikely alliance is forged between these two classmates from opposite sides of the track.

Cheese in the Trap caught my eye because of the male lead. A man with a dark side? Count me in. They chose the perfect actor, Park Hae-jin, to play Yoo Jeong. This was my first introduction to Park Hae-jin, and I am smitten. I love his face (he’s so handsome), and I love how stoic and cold he is. His personality and character are a lot different than male leads in other dramas I’ve watched (except for dramas like Mask), and it’s quite refreshing. This story is excellent, the characters are lovable, and I always look forward to watching this drama. I can’t wait to see how it ends (although I don’t want it to end).

Marry Me or Not

Marry Me or Not

Marry Me or Not: Onscreen couple Roy Chiu and Alice Ke from Office Girls reunite in this romantic comedy. Burned by Jiang Qian Yao’s (Harry Zhang) playboy antics, Hao Sheng Nan (Joanne Tseng) and Cai Huan Zhen (Alice Ke) have been frenemies since college. But when Qian Yao resurfaces to stir up trouble years later, he ignites a new breed of cutthroat competition between Sheng Nan and Huan Zheng, who are both headstrong women focused on succeeding in work and in love. Meanwhile, after seeing too many failed marriages, divorce lawyer Justin Hao (Roy Chiu) becomes increasingly cynical.

Marry Me or Not is coming to a close this month, and you can expect a review from me after this show ends. I started this Taiwanese drama around the same time as Oh My Venus, and I must say it’s holding up strong in my book. The last episode is this weekend, and I hope it ends on a high note, unlike a certain other drama.
